Breast Cancer Prevention

With a gradual increase in the number of breast cancer cases, women find themselves powerless to prevent it. But now, with various studies which were carried out by American researchers as well as researchers from other countries, we have come to know that there may be some preventive measures of breast cancer. A well balanced diet, healthy lifestyle and proper exercise can be effective for its prevention. Cancer is caused due to the failure of immune system. To prevent cancer, the immune system should not be taxed and the diet should be such that it supports the immune system. Altering one’s diet alone may prevent 35 out of 100 cancer cases.

Researchers have come up with varied opinion regarding the relationship between breast cancer and food, though it is very difficult to carry out a research in this area as people eat different varieties of food. But a clue of the relationship between the two can be found when we analyze the rate of patients suffering from this in America and Japan. Generally, it is seen that the rate of breast cancer patients among Japanese women is very few as compared to American women. But, it is also seen that when these Japanese women have come to live in America the rate has increased. So, it may be an indicator to the fact that there is some connection between the occurrence of this disease and people’s lifestyle and food habits, rather than this being an entirely inherited risk.

In the countries where people consume a good amount of fat in their diet there are more cases of breast cancer. Some studies show that by avoiding fat in diet, one can reduce the risk of breast cancer while others show that it has no relation with it. But most of the researchers feel that fat plays some role in breast cancer. The sensible approach would be to avoid its consumption as far as possible.

A few evidences show that red meat could increase the risk of breast cancer. So to be on the safer side, it is advised to opt for white meat or fish, as far as possible. It will be a healthy choice to consume a good amount of other foodstuff rich in protein, such as vegetable protein, lentils, Soya and beans.

Research has also shown that fruits and vegetables can be consumed as a preventive measure of breast cancer. It may be due to vitamin and mineral content present in the foodstuff. Anti-oxidant vitamins and minerals help in preventing the cell from damage, and it is the damaged cell, which sometimes become cancerous. A few studies have even shown that women who consumed a good amount of B vitamin folic acid and B12 have reduced chances of facing the risk of breast cancer.

The main point which everyone should keep in mind is that proper diet is just the primary prevention and it does not replace secondary prevention factors, which include detecting the tumor at the first stage. Mammography and self-examination still play an important role in cutting down the risk of death caused by breast cancer by an early detection of symptoms.
