Fighting Breast Cancer
Fighting Breast Cancer and the need for psychological support
Apart from the physical challenges, a cancer patient also has to undergo a psychological struggle. The moment a woman comes to know about the disease, she goes through a traumatic phase at the physical as well as emotional level. The patients may recover fast if they are given proper psychological support. Various support groups have been created to help the patients in dealing with the disease and this has also shown some positive effects.
The moment a woman comes to know that she is suffering from breast cancer, she goes through an acute stressful situation. She gets worried of her unpredictable future and various physical difficulties, which she has to face during the treatment. In addition to this, she is also worried about her physical appearance, which will undergo a great change during the course of the treatment. The patient should, apart from trying out some relaxation exercises, also understand that there are a few things in life, which are not within her control and she must learn to accept them. It is important that she does not lose her balance of mind in such a difficult time, which is very essential for any treatment to have the desired results.
A woman suffering from breast cancer is stressed out by the physical changes and the pain caused by the treatment. She may be worried about the physical changes, like hair loss caused by chemotherapy, or various skin changes caused by radiation therapy. People around her should help her realize that this is just a temporary phase and will not be there for the rest of her life. The family should give full support to the patient for her to see the positives in life when she may be going through the most difficult phase of her life. In some cases, she may not feel like opening up to people around her, and in those situations, she should be helped by even professional counseling. Most of the time, it is not just the patient but the entire family that undergoes a stressful condition. In those situations, even family members may go for counseling along with the patient.
Researches have been carried out to see if psychological support helps the patients of breast cancer in recovery or not. In one of these studies, two groups of women suffering from the disease were compared. The first group consisted of those women who got psychological support during the stage from diagnosis to the treatment of disease. The second group of women was just given standard care. At the end of the treatment, it was seen that as compared to the second group, the first group, which got psychological support, showed a significant improvement in adjusting with the disease and its treatment.
So we see that it will be a good move on the part of the breast cancer patient to join a psychological support group available in her vicinity. This can help her deal with various emotional upheavals during the period of treatment and coming to terms with the disease. This will help her make positive change in her life during this period, and a positive mind will definitely help in responding faster to the stressful treatment of the disease.
