Treatment of Breast Cancer
Treatment of Breast Cancer and its latest developments
Among the different types of cancers, breast cancer is the most common in American women, showing a constant rise in incidences every year. Out of 11 deaths in women, 1 is due to breast cancer. To deal with the problem, various researches are being carried out for a proper treatment. The emphasis now is on making the treatment less morbid and thus on improving the quality of life.
There are two options of treatment for breast cancer, the local treatment and the systematic treatment. The local treatment is performed on the breast and its surrounding area and it includes surgery and radiation oncology. The systematic treatment on the other hand, treats breast cancer cell, which develops on other part of the body, and the treatment includes hormone therapy and chemotherapy. Doctors combine both the treatments to achieve the best outcome.
Surgery is generally the most common treatment for breast cancer. In this form of treatment, the cancer cell is taken out from the body through surgery. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-ray or other types of radiation to kill cancer cell or stop them for further growth. In chemotherapy, drugs are given to the patient to kill the cancerous cell or to stop them from further spreading, while in hormonal therapy, hormones are removed or are blocked for their further action on the affected part.
In the field of breast cancer, many types of treatment are being tested in the clinic to control it. Sentiment lymph node biopsy followed by surgery is one of them. In this procedure, first of all the lymph node is removed from the body and is sent for biopsy and if cancer is detected, then the tumor is removed from the body. Another form of treatment is high dose chemotherapy with stem cell transplantation. A high dose of chemotherapy is given to the patient, which is followed by the transplantation of stem cell. But, the recent study has found that high dose of chemotherapy is not better than standard dose. Monoclonal antibodies as adjacent therapy are also one of the new developing treatments. In this treatment, antibiotics are made in the laboratory from single type of immune system cell and by infusion this antibiotic is given to the patient. This antibiotic kills the cancer cell and even stops further growth. A new form of treatment is being used which is a combination of chemotherapy and monoclonal antibiotics.
Swedish doctors in recent times have started giving partial breast radiation therapy to the patient of breast cancer, which just takes one week instead of seven weeks for the treatment. In this process, a balloon catheter is inserted after lumpectomy. Further a miniature x-ray tube electrically generates radiation. A great advantage of this treatment is that the impact of the radiation to the heart and lungs of the patient is comparatively less than in other procedures of radiation. This treatment can be performed anywhere and the patient does not have to travel a long distance to a big medical center. The journey of the treatment of breast cancer has come a long way, as the number of breast cancer cases increases, though the ultimate goal still remains the increase in the survival rate.
